Elkhorn Ridge Campground

An $8.2 million, 186-site RV camping center and resort with a registration building, two shower houses, pool house, and maintenance building.   All designed to meet the approval of the South Dakota Historic Preservation Office’s guidelines for construction of new buildings on an existing National Historic Landmark property – the Frawley Ranch – in the midst of historic homestead sites dating to the settlement of western South Dakota in the late 1700’s.  The project involved coordination with civil engineers and landscape architect for this remote site located at Interstate Exit #17 east of Spearfish, South Dakota.  Utilities were extended or provided on site and the latest in high-tech systems were employed, including wireless internet for all RV sites throughout the campground.  Other “green” technologies were also incorporated including instamatic water heaters in lieu of tank type water heaters.  The building designs evoke the materials, forms, and layout of the historic ranch buildings that remain on the site to this day, including use of the same quarry for the stonework.
